2007-2008 Audition Requirements

Symphony Orchestra & Symphonic Winds

 

Please contact the GEYSO office by phone 814.898.6243, or by email:       jmn25@psu.edu,  to schedule a time & date for an audition anytime throughout the year.

  

For the audition

   -     Bring a completed application form

   -     Auditions are private (a waiting area is provided in the lobby)

   -     No accompanists please

 

 

Strings

 

A. Violin, Viola, Cello:

      1.   Prepare two (2) contrasting selections from a solo concerto, orchestral  

            excerpt, or etude of your choice.  These selections should demonstrate

            your technical facility and lyricism and may be taken from two separate

            solo pieces. The selections should total 2-5 minutes in length. No

            accompanists please.

      2.  One major and One minor scale of your choice up to and including 2 octaves. Cellists play 2 octaves.  Be prepared to demonstrate different bow techniques at varying speeds.

       3.  Sight-reading

 

B. Bass

      1.   Prepare two (2) contrasting selections from a solo concerto, orchestral  

            excerpt, or etude of your choice.  These selections should demonstrate

            your technical facility and lyricism and may be taken from two separate

            solo pieces. The selections should total 2-5 minutes in length. No

            accompanists please.

2.  One major and One minor scale of your choice up to and including 2 octaves.  Be prepared to demonstrate different bow techniques at varying speeds.

Woodwinds & Brass

 

All Woodwinds and Brass please prepare:

     1.    Two (2) contrasting selections from a solo concerto, orchestral  

            excerpt, or etude of your choice.  These selections should demonstrate

            your technical facility and lyricism and may be taken from two separate

            solo pieces. The selections should total 2-5 minutes in length. No

            accompanists please.

 

      2.   One major and One minor scale of your choice up to and including 2

            octaves. Be prepared to demonstrate the ability to articulate and

            play a full dynamic range (pp-ff).

 

      3.   Sight-reading

 

Harp & Piano

 

A. All candidates please prepare:

      1.    Two (2) contrasting selections from a solo concerto, orchestral  

            excerpt, or etude of your choice.  These selections should demonstrate

            your technical facility and lyricism and may be taken from two separate

            solo pieces. The selections should total 2-5 minutes in length.

 

      2.   Sight-reading

 

B. Harp: C Major scale, hands together

 

C. Piano: One major and One minor scale, 3 octaves, hands together, one  

                   octave apart

 

Percussion

All instruments are provided. You are expected to bring sticks and mallets for the various instruments. 

 

A. All Percussionists please prepare:

1.   One selection from a solo concerto, orchestral  excerpt, or etude of your

      choice.  This selection should demonstrate your overall musicianship   

      (technical and lyrical). The selection should total 2-5 minutes in

            length.

 

2.   Sight-reading

 

B. Timpani & Snare Drum: be able to demonstrate the ability to play a roll pp-ff

 

C. Mallets: One major and One minor scale up to two (2) octaves

 

 

Overture Strings & Sinfonia Orchestra

These groups will not need to audition at all.  Simply show up to your rehearsal room at the time assigned for your group on Sunday, September 16th for the first rehearsal.

 

Rehearsal times for all groups are as follows:

 

11:00am-1:00pm           Overture Strings

12:00pm-1:00pm                          Sinfonia

1:00pm-3:30pm   Symphony Orchestra

2:00pm-3:30pm               Concert Winds

3:30pm-5:00pm        Symphonic Winds
